Delwa-Star H

Pain and burning when passing stools, stabbing pains, wetness and itching. Incorrect passing of stools and discomfort when sitting. These are all typical complaints of a universal illness which everyone is ashamed to talk about - hemorrhoids.

What are hemorrhoids?

Everyone has a hemorrhoid pad which ensures that the anus closes tightly. This pad is made up of an arteriovenus vascular system. If conditions are unfavorable, nodules develop which are commonly known as "piles." These enlarged nodules are not only detrimental to the anal sphincter but also lead to painful associated complaints. The ailment is divided into four different stages depending on the size of the nodules.

If there is "only" pain during and after passing stools this is known as 1st degree hemohrroids.

In 2nd degree hemorrhoids the nodules are already so large that they protrude when passing stools but are retracted automatically into the colon immediately afterwards. 2nd degree hemorrhoids are as large as cherry stones. 1st degree and 2nd de hemorrhoids are also referred to as "internal hemorrhoids" as the nodules ultimately stay in the colon without any treatment. By comparison, the so called "external hemorrhoids" are not spontaneously retracted.

3rd degree hemorrhoids can only be pushed back into the colon by hand. It is not possible to reposition 4th degree hemorrhoids at all.

A civilization ailment?

70% of all adults over 30 years of age have enlarged hemorrhoid pads. Nevertheless, not all of them have any discomfort. Exact figures of people affected by hemorrhoid complaints are not available as this illness is still kept secret in our modern society. Even if this ailment was previously widespread, a sedentary way of life, being overweight, a diet which is low in roughage and intense pressing when passing a stool all increase the risk of hemorrhoid complaints. But even pregnancy can lead to hemorrhoids. This condition, however, usually disappears after the child is born.

Treatment.

Thanks to modern medicine it is no longer necessary to leave hemorrhoid complaints untreated or to have them cauterized, a painful method which was used in the middle ages. In many cases 1st degree hemorrhoids can be effectively treated with ointments and suppositories; allergic reactions are rare as compatibility is regarded as a major concern. In the case of the mid-range degrees the hemorrhoids can be treated by a doctor, whereby rubber tape ligation or sclerotherapy are normally applied. Sclerotherapy means that substances which irritate the tissue are injected into the hemorrhoids. This leads to local inflammation which in turn causes the hemorrhoids to shrink. After only a few applications the hemorrhoids are usually so scarred that they can no longer cause any discomfort. In the case of rubber tape ligation, a tiny rubber band is fixed over the hemorrhoids. Within a few weeks the hemorrhoids are shed. For further information on the various treatment possibilities please refer to your general practitioner.

Important:

If traces of blood are visible in the stools, consult your doctor immediately as this could also indicate other rectal ailments which will only be unnecessarily aggravated through incorrect treatment.
